Shan State, Burma
– Vänta lite bara säger Saw Eh Ler Moo och går av bussen och in till det lilla huset vid vägkanten.Han pratar yvigt gestikulerande med damen i dörren till huset. Saw Eh Ler Moo är vår guide som nyligen har hämtat upp oss på Heho flygplats för att under de närmaste 4 dagarna visa oss lite av Shan State i östra Burma.
Har vi kört vilse? Är det någon släkting? Vi spekulerar vilt på bussen tills han kommer tillbaka.
– De har flyttat tillverkningen av trummorna till nästa by, vill ni se? säger Saw Eh Ler Moo när han kommer tillbaka. Klart vi vill! Trummorna han refererar till har vi nyss sett när vi tog ett snabbt frukoststopp.
-Just wait a little says Saw Eh Ler Moo and jumps of the bus and goes in to the little cottage by the road. Saw Eh Ler Moo is our new guide who just pick us up at the small airport in Heho and he will guide us for the next four days through the Shan State in the eastern parts of Burma.
Are we lost? Is the lady we can see him talking with, pointing in different directions, a relative? We are guessing wildly in our small bus before he returns.
-They have moved the manufacturing of the drums to the next village, would you like to see? says Saw Eh Ler Moo when he returns to the bus. Of course we want! The drums he refers to are drums we just saw having a quick breakfast stop near the airport.
Vi fortsätter till nästa by och hoppar av bussen. Saw Eh Ler Moo tar oss igenom byn och visar oss inte bara trumtillverkning utan vi börjar hos en familj som tillverkar tofu med uråldriga metoder. Överlag ligger all typ av lantbruk och tillverkning långt efter oss i västvärlden. Lantbruket sköts fortfarande till stor del för hand med kanske en oxe till hjälp för att plöja och frakta saker. ”Kinaoxen” är mäkta populär i byarna. Kinaoxen är en liten minitraktor som börjar ersätta oxen här och var. Importerad begagnad från Kina. Annars importeras de flesta av bilarna begagnade från Japan vilket är lite roligt för där är det vänstertrafik och det är det inte i Myanmar utan här är det precis som hemma, högertrafik. Jag förstod inte riktigt varför det kändes fel när jag satt i baksätet innan guiden berättade varför:)
We continue our journey to the next village where we make a stop and jump of the bus. Saw Eh Ler Moo takes us on a walk through the village showing us not only the drum makers but a place were they make tofu with ancient methods.
Overall all are the manufacturing- and farming methods in Burma far behind what we are used to in our part of the world. The farmer still makes most of his work by hand with maybe some help of an ox to plough. The China Ox is mighty popular in the villages. It is a small tractor imported from China and slowly taking over the Ox’s place. Otherwise most car’s in Burma are imported from Japan which is a bit funny since in Japan they drive on the left hand side which you don’t do in Burma. I didn’t understand at first why it felt so strange while sitting in the backseat of the car until our guide told us this…:)

Mitt i byn sitter en stor samling människor. Det är tyst och lugnt trots att det säkert är över 100 personer. Det lagas lite mat och spelas kort.
– De sitter här och väntar i 3 dagar på en begravning berättar Saw Eh Ler Moo. Det är för att den dödes släktingar ska ha tid att ta sig hit från när och fjärran.
Infrastrukturen i Burma är extremt dålig så att röra sig längre, eller föralldel kortare, geografiska sträckor tar tid om man inte har råd att flyga vilket är ganska få som har. Medelinkomsten i Myanmar är 800 USD. Män som har en fabläss för kortspel har satt i system att ta reda på var den här sortens likvakor hålls och åker runt för att spela kort berättar vår guide vidare.
In the middle of the village we find a large gathering of people. It is very quiet and calm event hough it is probably more than 100 people sitting there. In the corner some women are cocking and the men are playing cards.
– They will sit here and wait for three days, Saw Eh Ler Moo tells us, to give the relatives not living nearby time to get here.
The infrastructure in Burma is bad so to go from A to B takes time, if you don’t can afford to fly which pretty few can. The average salary in Burma is USD800 per year.
Men with a passion for card games have made a habit of going around to wakes for the chance of a good game of card Saw Eh Ler Moo continuous.

Sakta vandrar vi vidare genom byn. Tillslut når vi trumtillverkaren, i ett litet hus i utkanten av byn. Han håller just nu på att göra en trumma som är dryga metern hög. Trummorna tillverkas av en solid trädstam som mejslas ihålig för hand. Att tillverka en trumma av den här storleken tar ca 14 dagar berättar mannen. Trumman vi såg där vi åt var säker över 4 meter… Mannen berättar vidare att han han lärde sig hantverket som ung när han bodde i klostret av sin chefsmunk.
Vår vandring genom byn är tillända och vi hoppar tillbaka in i bussen och far mot nya äventyr.
Slowly we stroll through the village and on the outskirt we finally reach the house of the drum maker. He is in the process of making a drum about a little more than a meter high. The drums are made from a solid piece of tree trunk which is made hollow, by hand. To make a drum of this size takes about 14 days the man tells us. The drum we saw in the restaurant was more than 4 meters…
We ask if making drums is something he has learned from his father but no he say’s it was the chief monk at the monastery that taught him when he spend a couple of years there in his youth.
Our walk through the village has come to an end and we jump on the bus to continue our adventure.
