Nä – vi ska inte ha några fler djur här hemma. Iallafall inte just nu… Utan för några veckor sedan fick jag en förfrågan om jag ville komma och fotografera hundarna på canilen i Lagos. Och det kunde jag verkligen inte säga nej till. Nästan bästa sättet att tillbringa en förmiddag om du frågar mig. Hundar & en kamera vad mer kan man behöva;)
Om du översätter canil så blir det kennel men här handlar det inte om uppfödning utan om att ta hand om hundar och katter som har vanvårdas eller där ägarna av olika anledningar inte längre kan ta hand om sina djur. Canil de Municipal de Lagos drivs av kommunen men behöver även volontärer som hjälper till.
Volontär vid canilen
Jag är själv inte alls engagerad i canilens arbete men Martin är där ett par dagar i veckan för att hjälpa till så att hundarna får komma ut på en ordentlig promenad. Det är en av sakerna du kan göra för hundarna. Annat du kan hjälpa till med är att vid behov bada dem. Ibland söker canilen fosterhem eller extra utrustning. Följ dem på deras facebooksida om du är intresserad av att hjälpa till!
Kärlek vid första ögonkastet
Om jag inte visste att Tintin skulle få en svartsjukedepression skulle jag ha plockat hem denna sötnos direkt. De där öronen och bedjande ögonen är oemotståndliga. Belinha är fortfarande en ganska orolig själ men under dagens promenad gjorde hon stora framsteg. Hon åt både godis direkt ut hand och blev klappad. Inte av mig dock, jag var alltför skrämmande med keps och stor kamera. Men jösses så söt!

Jag hade en fantastisk förmiddag tillsammans med min kamera och alla dessa hundar. Så mycket hundlycka! Och hos henne där bakom kameran, så roligt men ack så svårt att fota dessa energiknippen!

QUESTIONS we get!
We tend to deal with a lot of questions, whether they are about what does this group do? How someone can volunteer? We are looking for a dog or cat we to adopt? As this group has grown quite significantly over the past twelve months, we thought it was time to clarify exactly how we try and support the Lagos Municipal Canil and at the same time highlight where we are in need of your help.
Primarily this group is all about communicating opportunities whereby people can get involved with activities that allow the canine and feline guests of the canine have a more active, enjoyable stay, whilst the canil and ourselves try to find their new families. It’s also about sharing our time with the dogs and cats and showcasing those available for adoption.
We love to post about our walks, the pleasure and joy we get from seeing those happy faces and wagging tails as they enjoy an hour of exploring new smells, experiencing different noises and just generally socialising. If you would like to volunteer as a walker you can contact Susanne Lotström who will gladly furnish you with further details on how to sign up. We currently walk on Tuesday and Friday mornings at 9.30am (this can change depending on what is going on in the canil). Also, once a month we have an afternoon that is dedicated to grooming and bathing, especially during the summer months this is so important. Unfortunately we are seeing the number of dogs and cats at the canil increasefor many reasons and the number of adoptions decrease. This shows how important it is that we try and jump on every opportunity we are given to show some extra love to the guests of the canil. Now we know some people are unable to join us on the various days that volunteers are allowed to work with the canil staff (walking / bathing) but there are other ways you can be of help.
1. Foster families, we never know when we are going to receive a call from the canil saying ”We have puppies / kittens that need bottle feeding” or ”We have a cat that need surgery, do you know someone to look after it whilst it recovers” or ”We have a dog that has been adopted by a family abroad that needs a place to stay whilst arrangements are being made”. etc
2. Equipment. We do have an equipment store which contains everything from puppy milk / crates / training pads/ dog food / cat food. Mostly this is used to support our fosters or other local associations if they have a desperate need. We are always looking for crates / travel boxes / food / milk / dog training pads, so if you have any of these items you no longer need please let Fiona Gallagher know.
3. Telling people about us and what we do. It comes as a surprise to a lot of people in Lagos Municipality that a) there is a Municipal Canil and b)there is a volunteer group. So please tell your friends & neighbours about us – or maybe just do a post on your facebook page about us and if you volunteer, tell people about the good it does not just for the dogs but you as well.
4. Share and comment on posts. Sharing is so critical to our success! We are limited to the number of posts we can put out through other groups. You cannot imagine the impact that sharing has. For example: I shared the post about Ilsa on Algarve Dog Rehoming where she was spotted by the wonderful Carol Jackson in the UK. Carol’s adoption experience with us led to Daisy, Toby, Millie all being adopted by families in the same area.
